Garment Rail Buying Guide
A garment rail is the quickest way to hang and show clothes, but the right one depends on the weight you'll hang, how often it moves and the space you have.
Types of garment rail
- Economy rails: light, simple rails for occasional use, events and light loads. Usually in 4ft, 5ft and 6ft lengths.
- Reinforced and heavy-duty rails: stronger frames, often on large castors, for full rails of coats and suits and daily use in stockrooms.
- Double-height rails: two levels of hanging on the same floor space, ideal for stockrooms and children's clothes.
- Adjustable rails: the height can be raised or lowered to suit long or short garments.
- Circular, four-way and spiral rails: show stock from every side in the middle of the shop floor.
- Wall-mounted and tubing systems: rails fixed along a wall, or built from tube and fittings to fit your space exactly.
Things to check
- Length: measure your space, and allow room to walk around free-standing rails.
- Load: coats, suits and wedding dresses are heavy; choose a reinforced or heavy-duty rail for them.
- Castors: wheels make a rail easy to move; larger castors roll better under a heavy load.
- Height: long dresses and coats need a taller rail (or an adjustable one) so they don't touch the floor.
Accessories
Rail covers keep stock clean in storage and on the move. Bottom shelves add space for shoes and boxes, rail dividers separate sizes, and extension bars lengthen some rails. Size cube markers on the hangers help customers find their size.
